Background of the study
Diaspora investments have emerged as a potent force in stimulating local economic growth by channeling financial resources and expertise from citizens residing abroad. In Asaba Local Government Area, Delta State, these investments play a critical role in funding infrastructural projects, real estate developments, agricultural ventures, and small-scale industries (Obi, 2023). Improved communication technologies and remittance channels have facilitated increased engagement between the diaspora and local communities. These investments not only contribute to job creation and improved public services but also enhance the overall economic climate by introducing new business practices and innovation (Ikechukwu, 2024). However, challenges such as bureaucratic bottlenecks, lack of transparent investment frameworks, and inadequate policy support sometimes limit the effective utilization of diaspora funds. This study aims to investigate the channels through which diaspora investments flow into Asaba, assess their impact on local economic growth, and identify obstacles that prevent their optimal utilization. The research intends to provide comprehensive recommendations to enhance the enabling environment for diaspora investments, ensuring that they contribute significantly to sustainable local development.
Statement of the problem
Despite the potential benefits, Asaba faces challenges in fully harnessing diaspora investments for local economic growth. Bureaucratic inefficiencies, opaque investment processes, and insufficient local policy support hinder the effective mobilization and utilization of diaspora funds (Obi, 2023). These challenges result in suboptimal investment outcomes that do not translate into significant job creation or infrastructure improvement (Ikechukwu, 2024). Consequently, the local economy fails to fully benefit from the financial and technical resources available from the diaspora. This study seeks to identify the barriers that limit the positive impact of diaspora investments and propose strategies to optimize their contribution to local economic development in Asaba.
